First of all, what are cuticles? To understand this we must understand the exact anatomy and location of the cuticle on the finger. The thin band of tight skin at the very base of the nail is actually called the proximal fold of the eponychium. Or the nail fold. This IS NOT the cuticle. The cuticle is the thin layer of dead skin sitting on top of the nail, directly in front of the proximal fold. To be more specific, it is actually the bottom layer of eponychium cells that get pulled along and out as the nail grows.
The cuticles purpose is to be a seal that prevents bacteria and germs from getting underneath the nail bed. While the cuticle can be shortened and some nail technicians choose to cut it, the proximal fold shout never be cut. This can compromise the nail matrix and result in an infection. Cuticles can be pushed back to avoid overgrowth and stiffness, however they also need to be maintained and hydrated. While they are dead skin cells they are still skin cells! Avoid harsh nail care products and chemicals that will dry them out. Inacril not only cares for nails but makes sure cuticles stay moist and healthy as well!
